Part D Late-Enrollment Penalty Calculator

The Part D penalty is 1% of the national base beneficiary premium for each month you went 63 or more days without creditable prescription drug coverage — added to your premium for as long as you have Part D (Medicare.gov).

An educational estimate, not an official determination — Medicare calculates your actual penalty. The base premium field is deliberately not pre-filled: it changes every year, and your penalty recalculates with it. Nothing you enter is stored.

Frequently asked questions

I don't take any prescriptions — do I still need Part D?

Usually yes. A low-cost Part D plan today is almost always cheaper than the permanent penalty you would owe after going years without coverage — and prescriptions have a way of arriving without warning.

How long does the Part D penalty last?

For as long as you have Part D coverage (Medicare.gov). It also recalculates each year against the new national base beneficiary premium, so it generally grows over time rather than staying fixed.

What counts as creditable drug coverage?

Coverage expected to pay, on average, at least as much as standard Part D — typically employer or union coverage, VA drug benefits, or TRICARE. Your plan must tell you in writing whether it is creditable; keep that notice.

Why does this calculator ask me for the base premium?

Because the national base beneficiary premium is republished every year, and a number baked into a web page goes stale the moment it changes. Look up the current figure at Medicare.gov and enter it, and the result stays correct.

Method: 1% of the national base beneficiary premium per full month without creditable coverage, rounded to the nearest $0.10, applied for as long as you hold Part D (Medicare.gov). Your exact amount is determined by Medicare, not by this page. Employer, VA and TRICARE drug coverage usually count as creditable — have us check your coverage history before you assume a gap exists.
